Dr John Streator is a pivotal character in the American Streeter/Streator saga: he's the fellow that decided to change the spelling of his last name and thereby launched his own, namesake branch of the family. Doctor Streator was illustrious enough to shoulder the responsibility. He was a medical Ph.D. when "Doctor of Philosophy" generally meant one was a preacher. He was interested in empirical knowledge, and sought out the vanguard of "modern thought" in an era that men like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin sought to reconcile humanist ideals with scientific inquiry. He was a Modern Man.

Dr Streator grabbed his musket and answered his militia's call to arms in the heat of Massachusetts's 1775 rebellion against the British. His descendants pioneered the Northwest Territory and established themselves as a leading family of early Ohio, and were founding theologians of the Disciple of Christ Church. But, before him we have traced nine generations of English Kentishmen and American Puritan forebears that have their own claim to shaping the basic tenets of liberty, faith, and the body politic we all cherish as Americans.
