William Rayen's Regiment

The following is a transcription of the roster of men answering the call-up of Militia in Trumbull (and present Mahoning) County, Ohio upon the collapse of General Hull's force defending Detroit. In Amateurs, to Arms!, John Elting paints a dire picture of the moment:

"Detroit lost, a tidal surge of war parties swept the northwest. Farms and small settlements went up in flame, their inhabitants butchered, herded into captivity, or sent fleeing in uncertain search of safety." (1)

According to contemporary accounts, there were "few left at home except women, children, old men, cripples, and invalids."(2)
