The
sisters, Gertrude Inez Streator and Fanna Wright, remained close
throughout life. Gertrude corresponded with the extended family, giving generally
upbeat accounts of "the doin's" of family members. She and Fanna
also collected invaluable family reminescences into a Family History, from
which we have only extracts.
But, this paen by Gertrude Inez to her sister
Fanna was penned for an organization news letter, reprinted below. Fanna
was, indeed, an impressive woman!
A PIONEER LAWYER
"FANNA B. WRIGHT, member of Chapter
B, Shelton, Washington, is one of America's pioneer lawyers. Her husband,
D. F. Wright, is a Superior Judge of Thurston and Mason Counties. When Mrs.
Wright was a bride she entered the School of Law, Ohio Northern University,
Ada, Ohio, with her husband. Later they went to Drake University, Des Moines,
Iowa, and were graduated in 1899, with the degree LL.B. They were then admitted
to Iowa State Bar and to the United States District Court.
In 1900 they moved to Davenport, Washington, were
admitted to the Washington State Bar, and began practicing law. Later they
moved to Shelton, Washington, to continue their work. In the meantime they
completed advanced research work earning the degree LL.M. conferred by Drake
University.
Law practice claimed the attention of the firm,
Fanna B. Wright and D. F. Wright until Mr. Wright became Superior Judge of
Thurston and Mason Counties. The Wright family then moved to Olympia, Washington,
to make their home and to educate their son, Charles T. Wright, who is now
a practicing attorney in Shelton, Washington.
Mrs. Wright leads an active interesting life,
not only in her profession, but also in civic and community affairs. She is
one of the founders of Shelton Public Library. A group of interested women
organized a little library which they kept open certain days each week for
reading and for circulating books. The books were donated by friends of the
library. The project grew until the City of Shelton and Mason County assumed
responsibility for its operation and maintenance. Now it is a regular Carnegie
Library with a beautiful building, thousands of books, and a staff of trained
librarians. Mrs. Wright has been instrumental in founding another small library
located at Hoodsport, Washington. The Hood Canal Women's Club is now its sponsor.
Mrs. Wright is a member of P. E. O.; The American
Bar Association; National Association of Women Lawyers, American Judicature
Society Washington State Bar Association, American Association of University
Women; International Federation of University Women; American Museum of Natural
History; The Arboretum Foundation; The National Iris Society; Order of the
Eastern Star; General Federation of Women's Clubs; Director of Epsilon Sigma
Omicron Chapter; Grapeview Woman's Club; Garden Society; National Grange;
Red Cross.
Mrs. Wright has interest in flowers and birds,
as well as in books. Among her unusual books are the first edition of Dalton's
BIRDS and William Rickatson's THE GENUS IRIS.
